Dauphin County Prison Inmate Pronounced Dead after Being Found Unresponsive

Jan 31, 2022

An inmate at Dauphin County Prison died Monday after staff found him unresponsive in his cell.

Jamal K. Crummel was pronounced dead at the prison at 10:12 a.m. by a Dauphin County deputy coroner.

Prison and medical staff attempted life-saving measures – including CPR and AED – but Crummel did not survive.

A corrections officer on a routine check found Crummel unresponsive in the bed in his cell at 9:26 a.m. and went into the cell to tend to Crummel. Medical staff were summoned to the cell. LifeTeam EMS also responded to the prison.

Crummel did not have a cellmate.

Crummel was at Dauphin County Prison on several felony aggravated assault charges. He was incarcerated on Sept. 15. Bail was set at $150,000 cash.

All charges were held over at a preliminary hearing on Oct. 13.

As an inmate, Crummel spent about a month at an area hospital before he returned to the prison on Jan. 24.

On Monday morning, medical staff checked on Crummel at 7:43 a.m. and spent about two minutes with him.

At 9:03 a.m., a nurse spoke to Crummel about his medication; Crummel refused to take the medication.

The Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the circumstances around Crummel’s death.
