Dauphin County Commissioners Pass Act 57 Resolution to Relieve New Homeowners of Tax Penalties
The Dauphin County Commissioners this week passed a resolution in accordance with Act 57 which will relieve new homeowners of a penalty for real estate taxes due to the bill not being received in the year of purchase.
Commissioners Mike Pries, Chad Saylor, and George P. Hartwick, III, unanimously passed the resolution at the Nov. 16 public meeting.
Act 57 was signed into law in July by Pa. Governor Wolf.
The resolution enacts a waiver of penalties for unpaid real estate taxes for homeowners who purchase a home and do not receive the purchase year’s tax bill in a timely manner.
This provision will only apply if a property owner buys a property and does not receive the tax bill within the first 12 months of ownership. The property owner must submit documentation to their municipal tax collector demonstrating he/she has owned the property for less than 12 months.
Act 57 does not exempt people from paying real estate taxes.
