When the Erie Canal opened in 1825, the Pennsylvania Legislature was still dithering over the details of the proposed construction of what would become the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal. The loss in revenue pushed the government into action and by the 1830s, the canal boom was in full swing. Archibald McAllister lamented the route cutting his property in two at the same time his son, John Carson McAllister, was thriving. John served as a superintendent, supervisor, and eventual acting canal commissioner. Explore the engineering required, famous travelers who passed by Fort Hunter, and what has been left behind of the once awe-inspiring Pennsylvania Canals. The exhibit is included in a tour of the Mansion. Closed on Mondays.
